The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

The Raven picture of a raven and a skull on pieces of old news print with the phrase of Nevermore as well

“The Raven” by American poet Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) is a quintessential Halloween poem. Many years ago, I heard a version recited by the famous American actor Vincent Price (1911 – 1993) and fell deeply in love. I will try to keep this post short as the video clip I found is about ten minutes long—but well worth taking the time to watch. I truly hope you all will enjoy it as much as I have.

Halloween is my thing! No, seriously, it is, I promise. I have story playlists, musical playlists, baking lists, craft lists, and of course, movie lists. Ever heard about the folks who are obsessed with a holiday? If so, I am solidly in the “Halloween is a lifestyle” category. For those who have actually met me, this is no surprise. I get absolutely bubbly about ideas and new things for this season. My children often tell me how ridiculous I am.

I also would love to hear what some of your spooky traditions are, as well. Please share yours in the comments or on any of our socials.

The old English style of “The Raven” can be hard to read. With a bit of patience and the overacting style of Vincent Price, I am sure even younger generations will enjoy it.

For Those Who Enjoy Analyzing “The Raven”

For anyone who has taken the time to review the poem, this is where some additional beauty can be found. I love how much the poem can be debated. Is it autobiographical? Is it basically just entertainment? Was Poe depicting the internal struggles of man versus himself or his internal struggles with sadness? The list goes on.

Below is a link to a rather entertaining analysis you might enjoy. The way this site sets up is that you can highlight predetermined sections of the poem, and it will pop up commentary. Some of the commentaries are amusing, and other parts are enlightening.
